Ask The Pharmacist Question
What are generic drugs?
Ask the Phamacist Answer
When a Pharmaceutical Company identifies a drug in their laboratory, they are granted a patent for that drug for a period of 20 years. During this 20 year period, no other manufacturer or company is legally allowed to produce or sell that drug without the patent-holder's approval. This eliminates all price competition which is why most drugs that are not generic are rather expensive. This reason for this patent protection is to allow the Pharmaceutical Company that developed the drug to recoup the money it spent on research and marketing, and of course to also make a profit.

After the patent expires in 20 years, other pharmaceutical companies can manufacture and market the same drug. The generic and non-generic drugs are identical. They contain the exact same quantities of the same active ingredients in the same dosage form. This create price competition among the different generic manufacturers, which results in lower prescription prices for you, the consumer.
